A difficult Metroidvania game set in a world of eldritch horror

Vigil: The Longest Night is a 2D side-scroller game that is set in a world where a creeping evil is infesting the countryside around the protagonist’s hometown. The game is a Metroidvania-style game and aims to be extremely difficult.

The developers describe this game as a Souls-like in reference to the notoriously difficult Dark Souls games. It is also described as a Metroidvania game in reference to games like Castlevania, which helped establish this genre of game.

Save your village from evil

In Vigil: The Longest Night, the player takes control of Leila, a woman on a quest to save her village from the creeping evil that is rolling in from the surrounding countryside. She will explore a number of environments, from dank caves to abandoned villages and haunted forests. She must navigate the world that lies between dream and reality to uncover the secrets of the evil threat.

2D combat

The player will have the opportunity to experiment with 4 different types of weapons, with each type having many variations. Combat is precise and intentionally difficult, and the player will periodically face off against tougher bosses. There is also a complex skill tree through which the player can improve their character’s abilities.

A visually impressive but difficult game

Vigil: The Longest Night is undoubtedly a visually impressive game, thanks to the detailed artwork used in combination with high-quality effects. It is very difficult, however, and that can lead to some battles feeling particularly unrewarding.
